Castelbarco Mausoleum
An elegant funerary monument that tells stories of nobility and 19th-century art in Ispra.
Memory and grandeur on Lake Maggiore
In the peaceful silence of Ispra, away from the most popular tourist routes, stands an architectural masterpiece remarkable for its elegance and historical value: the Castelbarco Mausoleum. Located opposite the village cemetery, this funerary monument is not only a place of remembrance, but also a refined expression of 19th-century funerary art.
The noble origins of the mausoleum
Architecture and fine materials
The structure immediately impresses with its monumental character: built in white and red granite from the prestigious Baveno quarries, it features a polygonal layout topped by a large coffered dome. The overall design recalls classical and Neo-Renaissance models, with meticulous attention to decorative details, both outside and inside.
Inside the mausoleum, in an atmosphere of respectful silence, the marble sarcophagi of the Castelbarco family members are preserved, arranged in a scenic composition beneath the dome, like a small votive temple.
An intimate and little-known place
Despite its architectural and historical value, the Castelbarco Mausoleum remains little known even today, including among regular visitors to Lake Maggiore. This is precisely why a visit takes on an almost intimate and private character. It is the kind of discovery that offers a sense of exclusivity and a deeper connection with the history of the place.
Why visit it
Visiting the Castelbarco Mausoleum means discovering a lesser-known yet deeply fascinating part of Lombardy’s cultural heritage. It is a stop that can enrich any itinerary, especially for those passionate about art, architecture, history, and noble genealogies.
